Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything homeowners and businesses ask us before booking stump grinding.
Are you a new company?
Yes — Cypress Stumpworks is a newly founded, specialized stump-grinding business. We built it around one job only, not as a side offering, so our equipment, pricing, and scheduling are all designed around doing it well rather than retrofitted from a lawn-care or tree-trimming operation. We do bring hands-on heavy equipment experience to it — prior work operating excavators and skid steers — so running the machinery isn't new, even if this specific business is. Every job matters to our reputation from day one, so we're upfront about pricing, show up when we say we will, and don't cut corners to save time.
How much does stump grinding cost?
Most residential stumps run from about $200 for small stumps to $700+ for large, mature trees. The exact price depends on diameter, wood type, root spread, access, and how many stumps are involved. Send a photo and we'll give you a specific quote before any work is scheduled.
How do I measure my stump?
Measure at the base of the stump, not the top of the cut — the base is often several inches wider. Look for where the stump meets the normal level of the ground around it. If the soil or grass is raised in a hump around the stump, that hump is usually buried stump, so measure across the whole hump, edge to edge, at its widest point. No tape measure? Send a photo with a shoe or tape measure next to the stump for scale, or step back and take a wide shot, and we'll estimate it from there.
- Not here: the top of the cut. It can read several inches small.
- Not here: where the wood disappears. Raised ground around the stump is still stump, just buried.
- Measure here: edge to edge across the mound, where it meets the normal ground level.
How deep do you grind a stump?
Standard grind goes 6–8" below grade, which is the right default for most jobs — deep enough that the area can be covered with soil, sod, or mulch without the stump reappearing as the wood settles. If you're planning to replant in the same spot, install landscaping, or just want extra root clearance, we offer a deep grind at 10–12" below grade for an added cost — just mention it when you request your quote.
Do you remove the stump completely?
Grinding reduces the stump and surface roots to wood chips below grade; it doesn't extract the entire root ball the way excavation would. For most residential and landscaping purposes, grinding is faster, less disruptive to the yard, and less expensive than full excavation.
What happens to the wood chips?
Our standard quote includes raking and leveling the wood chips on-site, so the area looks clean and tidy when we're done. If you'd rather we haul the chips and debris away completely, just let us know when you request your quote — hauling can be added for an extra cost.
Can you grind a stump in a backyard?
Yes. Part of why we run compact, tight-access equipment is to reach backyard stumps through standard gates without needing to remove fencing.
How small does the gate need to be?
Our main machine needs at least a 38" clear opening, measured at the narrowest point between the gate posts. If you're not sure whether your gate or side yard will work, include a photo of the access path with your quote request and we'll confirm before scheduling.
Can you grind large tree stumps?
Yes — large, mature stumps (including oaks and other dense hardwoods) are one of our specialties. Larger stumps take more time and a wider grinding radius, which is reflected in the quote.
Do you grind roots?
Yes. Surface roots that have heaved a sidewalk, patio, or lawn can be ground down separately from stump removal, either as part of the same visit or as a standalone job.
Do you provide commercial stump grinding?
Yes — we work with HOAs, property managers, builders, and commercial property owners, including multi-stump and recurring work. See our Commercial Stump Grinding page for details.
How quickly can I get an estimate?
Most quote requests get a response within 2 business hours.
Can I send a photo for a quote?
Yes — a photo-based quote is the fastest way to get an accurate estimate. Use the quote form to upload one or more photos along with basic details about the stump.
Do I need to be home?
Not necessarily, as long as we have clear access to the stump and can confirm the scope from your photos ahead of time. We'll confirm access arrangements when we schedule your appointment.
What should I do before stump grinding?
Clear the immediate area around the stump of furniture, decor, or obstacles, and let us know about any sprinkler lines, low-voltage lighting, or buried cables near the stump so we can work around them.
Can you grind palm tree stumps?
Yes. Palm stumps grind differently than hardwoods because of their fibrous structure — mention the species when you request a quote so we scope it correctly.
Do you clean up after grinding?
Yes — every job includes raking and leveling the wood chips so the site looks clean when we leave. If you'd prefer the chips and debris hauled away entirely, that's available to add on request.
